These days, transport seems to be all about being small and green, but that doesn’t mean that performance and style need to be sacrificed. In fact, all of this year’s nominees pushed the technological and aesthetic boundaries to change the way we see eco-transport. So here is what you need to know about it: It will all be emission free and it will be great-looking. (Read more)

It should be no surprise that many of this year’s nominees tried to redefine the way we receive and experience content. After all, the publishing, music and film industries have radically changed in the span of a few years, and designers have clearly tried to respond to these changes. (Read more)

Many nominees this year provided identity and social commentary, while others stood out for their combination of print and new media. The Newspaper Club in particular, started by Ben Terrett, Russell Davies and Tom Taylor did this brilliantly by giving an online platform to small and big publications to print their work cheaply and easily. (Read more)

Several of the nominees this year were concerned with making the workspace more friendly and comfortable ranging from the PARCS workplace stations designed by ParsonLloyd for Bene to the Seto Office Chair by Studio 7.5 (great for your spine) and Konstantin Grcic’s 360 Work Chair (if you constantly change positions when your work). (Read more)

It could be easy to assume that the fashion industry has not seen significant innovations during the past year since it has been hit particularly hard by the economic climate. But as this year’s nominees proved, it is sometimes under the toughest conditions and in the most unusual places that artists find their inspiration. (Read more)

As an opener for our Design of the Year 2010 Feature, where we’ll be looking at one category from the show every day until the winner is announced on 16 March next week, here are the nominees for the Architecture category. This year they included a library in South Korea, a 19th century German museum, and a housing project in Mexico, to name a few. It was an eclectic mix, but there were certain themes that a lot of them shared. (Read more)

Seems like the air on the other side of the Earth is a bit different. It has more of these so called creative fluids involved in it. INHOUSE are just one of those New Zealand/Australia based studios and collectives that proving that the small continent is full of …

Architect, photographer and archeologists Christopher Payne spent many years touring abandoned asylums across the United States to uncover the dark histories that lied within their decrepitating walls and gates. These facilities set up in rural areas, far away from the pressures of everyday life were mostly self-seficient communities, with just about anything you can imagine, from a beauty salon to a bakery to a bowling alley - all run by the patients. These pictures are a brief glimpse of a profound and touching research which led to a highly acclaimed book called "Asylum : Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals".

Taking you all back a little way here, but I heard this song in a mix on 8tracks this week and was blown away. Exposition is an MC from Boston but resides with his band, The Audible Mainframe, in Los Angeles. He started out as a spoken word artist, and the influence shows through in his rhymes, but then moved on to hip-hop. This track is off of his first album, The Metro. What stands out to me about this song are the inspiring lyrics and the simple, but surprisingly smooth beat. The guitar and the drums hold up the structure and tempo of the song while the horn section

Little Red Riding Hood Fight Back
Through the woods she walked
in her cloak of red,
Bound with food, for the side
of her grandmother’s bed.Riding Hood met a wolf,
and the wolf he seemed nice
So she told him her plight,
and he gave her advice.“Pick her some flowers”
is what the animal said,
as a plan began forming
inside his own head. While she picked her flowers,
the wolf, off he ran.
They were both going to visit
Red Riding Hood’s Gran. The wolf arrived first
at Grandmother’s gate,
He’d be quiet enough
and inside he would wait.“Come in little red,
cried Gran from her bed.
But in came the wolf,
who swallowed her instead.Red Riding Hood arrived
shortly after lunch,
and unleashed her fury
in one killer punch. After eating poor granny,
the wolf didn’t know,
our heroine had a black belt,
in the art of Tang Soo Do.
To increase awareness and registration for their children’s self-defense classes, The World Black Belts Center in Dubai tackled this in an unconventional way. Nope, they didn’t reverse punch parents into registering their kids, instead Memac Ogilvy Dubai created an illustrated children’s book that’s based on the well-known story of Little Red Riding Hood. What happens in the end? Our little heroine courageously beats up the big bad wolf to save the day. A simple call to action on the back cover – “You Too Can Fight Back” – provides the reader with more information on self-defense classes for kids and directs them to register. The End.

For the current Lincoln music promotion and integrated ad campaign via Team Detroit, Wild Plum Director Shane Drake teamed with visual effects company Ntropic to create a visually striking commercial and music video for electronica/indie rock rising stars Shiny Toy Guns.
In each, the Shiny Toy Guns glittery performance of Peter Schilling's hit Major Tom comes alive against a backdrop of screens showcasing the Lincoln MKZ. Ntropic designed the media projected on giant LED screen walls, which were then filmed with the live performance at the Orpheum theater for both the commercial and music video. Ntropic also provided graphics treatments, color correction and final composite.
For the backgrounds projected behind the band, Ntropic created a series of distinct environments designed to complement the galactic, ethereal quality of the song, while staying consistent with the intercut Lincoln MKZ commercials. These worlds were created by combining practically shot light elements with fully dimensional CG sets built in Maya, After Effects and Inferno.
In keeping with the live in-the-moment feeling of the performance it was decided to use super-bright LED screens behind the band rather than taking a more conventional green-screen approach.
